Cold Weather GEAR

 Cold Weather GEAR

Listen... I hate to be cold!  I have always liked bundling up and staying inside for the winter and eating lots of carbs- basically, I am a bear. A few things have started to get me out of doors a little more-- 1) we went on a vacation to Iceland awhile back. It was absolutely amazingly stunning and beautiful, but their summer temperatures were very similar to our winter temps! (It is currently 40 and raining at this moment). So I keep telling myself, that if I could have an amazing time hiking outside in Iceland, I can do it here too! 2) I have a toddler who tends not to sleep at night if we don't spend some portion of the day outside (great motivator)! I have been getting better, but having good gear and layering has definitely helped me a lot. Here are some links (affiliated links) to some of my favorite products!

I will refuse from making a joke to "all about that base", but...

Everyone agrees that baselayers are a MUST- I do agree, but I just can't pay $100 for something I am going to wear under other clothing... I just can't. So this is what I use. Maybe one day I will get desperate and fork over the $$ for Smartwool, or find an incredible sale, but until then, 32 degrees heat does the job!

 2nd layer

I usually just wear a button up shirt or long sleeved athletic shirt and jeans, nothing special here. If it is especially cold, or you have less moderate winters, then I would add a wool sweater- Icewool makes some great ones, but you can use any thrift store find!

Layer 2.5

Probably overkill, but because I really do not like the cold, I also wear a down vest under my coat. I'm not happy till I'm on the verge of sweating, folks! I have a Jcrew down vest, but their vests don't have down anymore (lame), but my husband really likes his down Eddie Bauer Vest!

Outer Layer

I love the Columbia Omni Heat line- I have two of them, because I stole one from my bff (it's cool), and they last for forever! I love that they have integrated wrist warmers!

Optional Outer layer

If it is raining, add a waterproof layer on top- my husband loves his from Eastern Mountain Sports, and I keep asking for this one for Christmas (guess I need to buy it myself, haha)

 Shoes

I stumbled onto a great deal on these Ahnu boots when an outdoor store was liquidating their clothing from their store...but if these ever wear out, I am going to need another pair! They are really great for hiking, climbing on rocks, and they are fairly waterproof (you can't be deeper than the laces). They are warm, and they dry FAST!

 Accessories

Hat- I love ones with a fleece rim, and this one also has omni heat!

Scarf- This Smartwool one is really nice; it isn't bulky or scratchy, so I add it over my vest, but still keeps me nice and warm.

Socks- These United By Blue Bison socks are the best socks in the world! So soft and so warm! They are made with upcycled Bison down, which is ridiculously warm. A few weeks ago, I stepped into a stream (it was deep), my foot got soaked, but between my Ahnu boots and these amazing socks, my foot was still nice and warm!

Gloves- something comfy and warm!
