Books

From age 10 months and up, books have been an absolute favorite for my now 26 month old. Montessori recommends using books with realistic photos and short, simplistic text. We do a lot of pointing at objects and naming them vs. reading the text in our books, though she definitely enjoys reading books with shorter sentences--She has even started memorizing some of them, which I find adorable. Here is our ongoing list of books, I will attempt to keep it organized by age- starting with the ones for newborns 💓💓 (Includes affiliate links at no cost to you!)

Spots and Dots

A great one for newborns-3 months or so. We used to prop it up, one page at a time next to our mirror during tummy time.

Baby Animals

I love the level of detail in this black and white board book. Great for newborns and up!

Black Cat & White Cat

I wish I would have seen this one when I-I was an infant! This one is very neat, and will be on my gift list for my next niece or nephew, for sure!

Faces

When I-I was an infant, she hated the car, so we gave her her "facebook" and it gave us a break from the crying (don't worry, she grew out of it, thankfully!) (infant- 9 months)

Scratchie

After she started to age out of the high contrast books, I-I really enjoyed touch and feel books. This one is clever and has some really good quality sensory pieces. ( I am always disappointed when touch and feel books skimp on the touch and feel aspect!)

On The Farm Touch and Feel

I really like the Priddy Books line- this is another quality touch and feel board book.

Bright baby box set

All great touch and feel board books for 8 or 9 months and older- they don't skimp on their textures!

Pat the Bunny Board Book

This was the first book that I. was really into- I love that it is realistic, interactive, sensorial, and simple-- She got into close to 10 months, but she still enjoys it at 26 months. Definitely get the hardcover- the spiral bound one doesn't withstand too much  love and affection.

Bright Baby Animals

This one is great- one animal photo per page, one word per page- perfect for ages 9 months and up.

Pat and friends box set

We also love the other books in the series, this one is a great baby shower gift! Also great for ages 8 months and up, though you may want to enjoy this one only together since the pages won't hold up to too much mouthing.

DK My First Farm

This whole series has been a favorite since 10 or 11 months- we do lots of pointing and naming, and they are nice and thick board books so they can handle a little bit of mouthing.

 DK My First Trucks

Another great one by DK- 10 months and older, but still enjoyed at 2 or 3 years old!

DK My First Nature

I know, overload--but we really did carry these books everywhere for about a year- they were great for pre-covid meals in restaurants, car trips, plane rides, etc.!

 DK My First Baby Animals

Ok, this is the last one--but this is the first one that we got of this series, and it is probably her favorite.

 See, Touch, Feel

Another good touch and feel book for 10 or so months and older

First 100 Words

Another favorite here, starting at around 10 months, and continuing into 26 months. This is an amazing one to have for the car--- I-I has fell asleep many times with this giant book draped over her.

My Big Animal Book

We have a similar one that must be out of print now, but I don't know how my toddler is so loud with this book, but she is always howling laughing over some animal or something!

Under the Ocean

This is from the Look Closer series that we have really enjoyed since 10 or 11 months. The clear panel transforms in each page, and I enjoy their illustrations, and the animals are named (so you don't have to guess on them!)

All Kinds of People

This one looks really sweet, there are a lot of great ones in this series as well

Baby Day

I introduced this one around 12 months, though it isn't a board book, so you may want to take into consideration. This is my 2 year old's favorite book. The illustrations are amazing, it has minimal text, and my 26 month old is starting to memorize it. I don't love some of the text (they label a sleeping baby as "lazy", another as "bossy"), but I change it as we go, and it is so well loved here.

Book of Woodland Bird Songs

We don't do battery operated toys, but we make exceptions! These are great for being able to recognize birds from their calls--the pages each feature one bird and have facts about each one! We got our first one from this series for I-I's first birthday

 A Walk Through the Woods

Another really cute nature book, great for 12 months and up

To the Moon and Back

My little one has been obsessed about the moon since around 15 months or so, and this Moon pop up/touch and feel book looks amazing!

Potty

A great way to spark interest in the potty! This one is well loved here! Around 12 months and older.

I am a Garbage Truck

There is a whole series of these that are really great!  12 months or so and up

This one goes in and out of stock on amazon due to its age (you may want to check ebay as well).  I am so glad I stumbled across these--- there is a whole range of "Mr. Roger's First Experiences" books! They have real photos, and I think Mr. Roger's was very much Montessori in the way that he communicated with children. My toddler hates going to the doctor, but after reading this book a million times she seemed to understand what was going on, and was much more calm. She was crying the moment they called her name, but at our last visit she didn't even cry when they pricked her finger! I would start at around 12 months with this one, though the pages are paper.

This one is not a board book-I think we got around 16 months. They use all real images of birds, my daughter's favorites are the cardinal and the woodpecker! This is definitely one that we will be enjoying for a long time!
